Can you share an HBO Max account? Household rules, streams per plan, and the $7.99 add-on
Household sharing is allowed. Outside it, there is exactly one sanctioned route: the Extra Member add-on at $7.99/month, one per account, one stream. Basic and Standard give 2 streams, Premium gives 4.
HBO Max splits this cleanly: you can share with the people who live with you. Anyone outside that has one official route, and it is a paid add-on.
Streams per plan
Your plan decides how many people can watch at once:

Two things worth pulling out of that table:
Basic and Standard give the same 2 streams. Paying up from Basic to Standard buys you ad-free viewing and downloads, not more simultaneous viewers. If your problem is people colliding, Standard will not fix it — only Premium will.
Basic with Ads has no downloads at all. And if you switch down to Basic, your existing downloads are deleted. That is a one-way door worth knowing about before you downgrade to save a few dollars.
Live events carry ads on every plan, including Premium. No tier removes them.
Sharing outside your household
There is one supported way: the Extra Member add-on.
- $7.99/month, on top of your base subscription
- One Extra Member per account — you cannot add two
- They get one profile, on one device at a time
- Their stream does not count against your own limit
That last point makes the maths better than it first looks. Add an Extra Member to a Standard plan and you have your 2 streams plus their 1, rather than carving a slot out of yours.
Is the add-on worth it?
Compare it against what a separate subscription costs. $7.99 buys one person one stream and one profile — but no ability to add a second person later, since the account is capped at one Extra Member.
For one friend or a family member at another address, it is cheaper than a second account and it is sanctioned. For two or more people outside your household, it does not scale and you are back to separate subscriptions.
"Your account is streaming on too many devices"
This message means you have hit the simultaneous limit for your plan, not that you have been caught sharing. Check what is actually playing before assuming anything is wrong — a paused stream on a TV in another room still holds a slot.
HBO Max lets you review and sign out of devices from your account settings. Doing that is the fix when an old device you no longer use is holding a stream.

- Downgrade to Basic: deletes your downloads.
