Does Netflix have a student discount? No — and here is what actually exists
Netflix has no student plan, no student verification, and no education pricing anywhere. Three things do genuinely lower the cost, and one widely repeated trick will get your account blocked.
Netflix does not offer a student discount. There is no student tier, no UNiDAYS or Student Beans verification, and no education pricing. Nothing on Netflix's own site mentions one, because one does not exist.
That is the whole answer. The rest of this page is what to do instead, because the alternatives people recommend are a mix of genuinely useful and actively risky.
What actually reduces the cost
1. The ad-supported plan. Netflix's cheapest tier carries advertising and is materially cheaper than the ad-free plans. If you are watching alone on a laptop, this is the single biggest saving available to a student, and it is entirely legitimate.
2. Sharing with the people you live with. One Netflix account covers a household, and Netflix defines a household as the devices connected at the main place you watch. Flatmates in the same home genuinely qualify. Split four ways, the ad-free plan stops being expensive.
3. Extra member slots. If someone outside your household wants in, Netflix sells an official add-on slot for less than a second account. It is the only sanctioned way to include someone who does not live with you.
The one to avoid
Sharing a password with someone at a different address is not a loophole — it is the specific thing Netflix's terms prohibit, and the household check is built to detect it. Netflix's own policy says outright that you may not share your account outside your household, and that people outside it must create their own account.
The failure mode is not a warning email. It is a device being asked to verify, at the least convenient moment, on someone else's TV.
Why students keep hearing otherwise
Two reasons. Netflix has run partner bundles in various markets, where a mobile or broadband plan includes Netflix — those are real, but they are the carrier's offer, not a student discount, and availability changes constantly. And Spotify's student bundle included Netflix in some regions at some points, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from. Check your own carrier's current offers; do not assume a bundle you read about last year still runs.
What to check before you pay
- Your mobile or broadband provider's current bundle list.
- Whether your household genuinely covers everyone you are trying to include.
- Whether the ad tier is actually a compromise for how you watch — for a single viewer on a laptop, often not.
