Does Spotify work offline? Yes, with Premium — and there is a 30-day catch

Yes, but only on Premium. Downloading music for offline listening is a paid feature. There is no setting, trick or workaround that gives a free account offline music.

One genuine exception: podcasts can be downloaded on a free account. If offline listening matters to you for podcasts rather than music, you already have it.

The 30-day rule nobody mentions

This is the detail that ruins trips, so it goes first.

Downloaded tracks play offline — but you have to go online at least once every 30 days so Spotify can sync your library. Past that window, your downloads stop working, even though the files are still on the device.

If you are going somewhere without connectivity for a long stretch, open Spotify on a connection shortly before you leave. Not the week before. Shortly before.

How much you can download

• 10,000 songs per device
• Up to 5 devices
• So 50,000 tracks offline in total across everything you own

Try to download on a sixth device and Spotify removes the downloads from whichever device you have used least recently. It does not ask first — so if a tablet you forgot about is holding a slot, that is where the loss will happen.

Turning it on

Download an album, playlist or podcast using the download control on that item. Once downloaded, tracks play automatically when you lose your connection — no mode to switch.

Offline Mode is a separate, stricter thing: switch it on and anything you have not downloaded is greyed out and unplayable. Use it when you want certainty that nothing will try to stream — on a plane, or on a metered connection abroad where a background stream costs real money.

Which plans include it

All of them. Offline downloads come with Individual, Duo, Family and Student alike. There is no higher tier to buy for this, and no plan that quietly excludes it.

If someone is trying to upsell you to a bigger Spotify plan for offline listening, they are selling you something you would already have.

Listening on a plane

Three things, in order:

1. Download before you go — over Wi-Fi, not mobile data, and not at the gate.
2. Open Spotify online within 30 days of the flight so the licence check is current.
3. Switch Offline Mode on before you board, so nothing tries to stream on a connection that is not there.

Do all three and it works. Skip the second and you will be staring at a greyed-out library at 30,000 feet with no way to fix it.
